Caitlin Jumping Image

"Caitlin Trainor is a disciplined artist, who defies category. Her dances are athletic, thought provoking, entertaining and well-crafted, a rare commodity in any field. I look forward to enjoying–in the broad sense of the word–more of her choreography."
-Wendy Taucher, Artistic Director, The Yard

The mission of Trainor Dance is to use movement as a playground for ideas, and to bridge the gap between accessibility and intellectualism in dance. Trainor Dance addresses social and intellectual themes with curiosity, athleticism and humor.

Founded in 2008 with a focus on interdisciplinary work, Trainor's choreography has been performed on both sides of the Atlantic in conjunction with visual art, poetry, music and film. Recent highlights of Trainor Dance include appearing at Platform Northeast, a regional live art platform in Newcastle, England, and selection as guest choreographer for Nacre Dance in Albany, NY. The company has performed at Skidmore College for Saratoga Springs Summer Arts Fest, the Center for New Media (CT), BAAD (Bronx, NY), the Greenspace (Queens, NY) and at SUNY Purchase (Westchester, New York) for the Steffi Nossen Dance in Education Fund annual concert. Trainor's choreography has been performed by student dancers at Northumbria University (Newcastle, England), Providence College (RI), Murray State University (KY) and Kennesaw State University (GA). Trainor was a recent recipient of a generous grant from New York Foundation for the Arts.

ABOUT THE CHOREOGRAPHER

Caitlin Trainor lives and dances in New York City. Originally from Rhode Island, she came to dance late in life, and earned degrees from Skidmore College (B.S. in Dance Performance and Choreography) and Mills College (M.F.A. in Dance Performance and Choreography) before moving to the Big Apple. Currently a member of the dance faculty at Barnard College/Columbia University, Caitlin is interested in the question of accessibility in art.

Before founding Trainor Dance, Caitlin danced for the Metropolitan Opera Ballet, Sean Curran, Amy Marshall, Kathleen Dyer and Cirque du Soleil Project One Drop. She was assistant choreographer to Mr. Curran and site-specific choreographer Stephan Koplowitz, and has taught at Dance City (Newcastle, England), Montclair State University, American College Dance Festival, and Sarah Lawrence College. Caitlin has choreographed new work on Nacre Dance Company (Albany, NY), Marked Dance Project (NJ), the students of Providence College (RI), Murray State University (GA), and Kennesaw State University (GA). During her recent tenure in the U.K., Caitlin co-founded Fresh, an ongoing forum for the development, sharing and discussion of new work for regional dance artists and audiences, and presented The Magic Behind the Movement, a lecture/demonstration, in conjunction with Northumbria University and Darlington Arts Center.

Trainor recently received a generous grant from New York Foundation of the Arts, and is grateful to Barnard College for ongoing production support.
